The paper “Mortality risk increased in colonic diverticular disease: a nationwide cohort study” was prepared collaboratively by Swedish researchers and the Australian Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health.

The ESPRESSO population-based cohort study aimed to better understand overall and cause-specific mortality in colonic diverticular disease. 97,850 cases with a medical diagnosis of diverticular disease and colorectal histology were compared to matched reference individuals and siblings. The findings indicated that mortality in colonic diverticular disease is increased (Hazard Ratio 1.27) compared to reference individuals in the general population, with presence of mucosal inflammation on colorectal biopsies predicting increased risk of mortality (Hazard Ratio 1.36).
